Skate into a new book!

It’s winter and the weather has turned cold.  Tired of sitting in front of the tv or computer and wondering what to do next?  How about ice skating?

January is National Skating Month and to celebrate it, we have put together a small sampling of books available at the Bridgewater Public Library about skating.  If you want to actually go and try ice skating, there is a local ice rink in Bridgewater.  You can visit Bridgewater Ice Arena for more information about their offerings.

We continue to restock our winter themed book displays, so check back often to see what books you might have missed and want to take home!   Our display features all varieties- nonfiction, chapter, picture book and board.  As always, if there is a specific title you are looking for, you can search for it and place a hold in the SAILS library catalog.

Ice breaker : how Mabel Fairbanks changed figure skating / Rose Viña

In the 1930's, only white figure skaters were allowed in public ice rinks and to compete for gold medals, but Mabel Fairbanks wouldn't let that stop her. With skates two sizes too big and a heart full of dreams, Mabel beat the odds and broke down color barriers through sheer determination and athletic skill. After skating in ice shows across the nation and helping coach and develop the talents of several Olympic champions, Mabel became the first African-American woman to be inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
