Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. This year Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 30, 2022.
Some towns celebrate Memorial Day by having parades with military personnel and veterans. Some people choose to honor Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorial sites, wearing a poppy, which is symbolic of those who died in war.
We have a children's book about the story behind the red poppy.
The Poppy Lady : Moina Belle Michael and her tribute to veterans
Looks at the life and career of Moina Bell Michael, who made the red poppy of Flanders Fields a symbol to remind people of the sacrifice and courage of America's soldiers. Includes author's note and extra information.

Memorial Day is observed in honor and remembrance of all the men and women who have died serving our country. Readers are introduced to the ways people mark this day, including attending parades, placing flags on graves at cemeteries, and wearing red poppies.
Memorial Day Facts:
It was once known as Decoration Day. This is because people used to decorate the graves of soldiers who lost their lives — with such items as flowers and flags.
From 1868 to 1970, Memorial Day was celebrated every year on May 30, instead of the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day is not the same as Veteran’s Day. Veteran’s Day celebrates all service men and women throughout history, while Memorial Day technically only celebrates those who died while serving.
