Memorial Day is Monday, May 27, 2024

Some towns celebrate Memorial Day by having parades with military personnel and veterans.  Some people choose to honor Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorial sites, wearing a poppy, which is symbolic of those who died in war.

We have a children's book about the story behind the red poppy.

Memorial Day by Amy Margaret

Memorial Day is a day to honor the men and women of the military who died fighting for our country. In this book, students will learn about the first Memorial Day in 1868, find out the meaning of the stars and stripes on the American flag, and discover why there are only three servicemen buried at the four burial spots at Arlington National Cemetery. They will come away with a new understanding of the traditions behind this heartfelt holiday.

A day for rememberin' : the first Memorial Day

In Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865, ten-year-old Eli and other newly freed slaves gather to honor the memory of fallen Union soldiers, an event considered to be one of the first celebrations of what is now called Memorial Day. Includes author's note.

 Memorial Day Facts:

It was once known as Decoration Day.  This is because people used to decorate the graves of soldiers who lost their lives — with such items as flowers and flags.

From 1868 to 1970, Memorial Day was celebrated every year on May 30, instead of the last Monday of May.

Memorial Day is not the same as Veteran’s Day. Veteran’s Day celebrates all service men and women throughout history, while Memorial Day technically only celebrates those who died while serving.
