Interested in some craft books for kids?  You have come to the right place.  We have a large collection of craft books from holiday crafts, to sports crafts and even crafts you can make for your pets.  If you prefer to browse this collection, it can be found in the 745 area in the children’s room.  Have a particular craft you are looking for- maybe you are a Harry Potter fan and want to make Harry Potter crafts- ask us to help you find a book about it or search the catalog from home and place a hold with your library card.

Did you know that every month the children’s room offers at least two crafts that you can take home and make?  At the beginning of the month, we have a “Take and Make” craft and around the middle of the month we offer a “Grab and Go” craft.  These crafts are available in the children’s room while supplies last.  Want to know the specific day the crafts are released?  Be sure to pick up a copy of the children’s room calendar at the circulation desk in the children’s room.

Website for crafts:

Everyone knows that Pinterest has a large assortment of craft ideas and activities.  What are some other sites you should be sure to check out?  Here’s the top five, in no particular order.

The Kids Craft Room has many different crafts that will entertain your children, although some do link back to Pinterest.  Here’s one that is perfect for the beginning of Spring, Handprint Daffodil, where you trace your children’s hands to become the petals of the flower.  (Imagine if you did that every year- you could watch your child’s handprints and flowers grow!)

Hands on Crafts for Kids is a little more difficult to navigate, but there is a wealth of craft projects and ideas.  There are downloadable episodes of crafts, but one section to check out can be found under the products header:  Series 800: 5,4,3,2,1 – 5 projects, 5 steps, 5 ingredients.

All Free Kids Crafts is organized into categories, such as seasonal, homemade, outdoor and more.  It is really easy to narrow your search, plus you can view each of the crafts as you scroll through the page- a definite plus for saving time!

Play Clay (from Mister Roger’s Neighborhood):

What’s better than playing with some clay?  Instead of Play-Doh, mix up your own with these common kitchen ingredients.  Some kids might want to build things out of the clay, while others will just mash it around.  It’s all about the experience of different textures, shapes and imagining what they could make!

Play Clay Recipe:

Materials:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon oil (optional)

Directions:

  • Combine and mix all ingredients and store in an air-tight container.

Pudding Slime:

Finally, we have to add the link for pudding slime.  A lot of recipes out there for slime use Borax or contact lens solution, but you know kids want to put things in their mouth…so here is a safer alternative.  This three-ingredient slime uses pudding mix, cornstarch and water to create a delicious slime.  There are also recipes for chocolate slime, peanut butter and jelly slime and more!
