Happy Book Lovers Day!

To everyone who loves to read books, purchase books or maybe just the smell of books, today we celebrate.  (and by this, we are totally giving you permission to have cake for dessert… or dinner!)

Why do people love books so much?  Is it because it reminds them of something in the past?  It might have something to do with the smell of books.  When a new shipment of books arrives, they often have that new book smell.  After time, the paper, adhesive and ink that the book is printed with begin to break down and a “new” smell is produced.  It has been described as a vanilla scent, which is from the breakdown of the wood pulp, also known as lignin.  When lignin breaks down and is exposed to air, it produces vanillin (a vanilla smell).

Now, we are not recommending that you come to the library and smell all of the books!  (To be honest there have been some books that have had strange smells.  There are books that smell like cigarettes, old fast food, etc.)  But you have to agree there is nothing better than the smell of a new book.  That’s one thing you won’t find in an e-book!

Do you prefer to read old favorites or are you more interested in the newest, popular books?
